Empowered Voices – Finding Connection in Europe
By Nicholas Chassagnez, ETA Program Assistant
Back in 2017, I traveled to Europe with my dad to visit my uncle and nephew. My uncle did my dad and me a huge favor by driving us throughout Europe, allowing us to stop in Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland. It was truly a dream come true to experience these beautiful places while spending meaningful time with extended family and creating memories that I still cherish today. Being able to explore different cultures, foods, and cities alongside family made the trip even more special and unforgettable.
Just recently, years later, I took the opportunity to return to Europe with my mom and cousin. We traveled to Spain to visit my uncle, the same uncle who drove my dad and me across Europe back in 2017. By coincidence, another cousin who lives in Spain was taking a 12+ hour bus ride to a concert in Madrid, and one of the bus stops happened to be in Valencia, where my uncle lives. Because of this unexpected moment, the cousin traveling with me was able to meet their sibling, my other cousin who lives in Spain, for the very first time during their bus trip. Seeing that sibling reunion happen naturally and unexpectedly was incredibly meaningful for all of us.
It is intergenerational and family connections like these that make moments so impactful and memorable. We spent several days in Valencia catching up on life, sharing meals, enjoying conversations, laughing together, and simply appreciating the chance to spend time with one another. Even though we all live in different places and lead different lives, those few days reminded me how important it is to stay connected with family and community across generations and distances.
Experiences like this remind me why connection matters so much. At Empowering the Ages, we strive to foster these kinds of relationships and meaningful moments so that, as a community, we can continue to support, uplift, and care for one another during both joyful and challenging times. Sometimes the smallest conversations, reunions, or shared experiences can leave the biggest impact and strengthen bonds that last for years to come.
