Empowered Voices – Building Self-Worth Through Intergenerational Connection
By Leah Bradley, Executive Director, Empowering the Ages
Our Empowering the Ages theme for March is self-worth.
I’d like to believe that each of us, no matter our age, background, or circumstances, knows our worth. I’d like to believe that we all understand we have inherent value and deserve respect, care, and opportunity.
But the truth is, that isn’t always reality.
Often, our sense of self-worth becomes tied to what others think of us or what we accomplish. We measure our value by achievements, recognition, or approval from others. When those things are missing, it impacts the way we see ourselves.
Research tells us something important, though: our sense of self-worth grows through connection. Studies have shown that positive social relationships, social support, and feeling accepted by others all strengthen how people view themselves.
In other words, when people feel seen, heard, and appreciated, their confidence and sense of value grows.
This is one of the reasons intergenerational programs are so powerful. When people from different generations come together to learn, share experiences, and support one another, something meaningful happens. A young person gains encouragement and guidance from an older mentor. An older adult rediscovers purpose by sharing their knowledge and life experiences. Each person brings something valuable to the relationship and to their connection to the larger community.
Through mentorship, shared learning, and genuine connection, intergenerational programs remind all participants that they have something important to contribute. They help people recognize their strengths and the impact they can have on others.
I challenge you. After reading this, think about one intentional way you can show someone they matter. It might be offering encouragement to a young person, taking time to listen to an older adult’s story, thanking someone for the work they do, or simply reminding someone that they are valued.
Then, I want to hear about it. Email me directly at leah@empoweringtheages.org and tell me what you did. I want to share your story. I want to highlight the ways our community shows up for one another. And I want to give others ideas about how they can do the same.
Because sometimes the most powerful way to build self-worth is simple: remind people that they matter.
