Empowered Voices – Learning Across Generations: What Crossing Paths Taught Me
By Katie O’Conner
My experience with Empowering the Ages’ Crossing Paths is nothing short of incredible! Crossing Paths is one of Empowering the Ages’ many programs where older volunteers come into high schools to have conversations with teenagers about all facets of life. The first time I ever participated in this program was in 2023 during my sophomore year. The volunteers who came to speak with us were wonderful, and gave me so much insight about my future, college, and life in general. What I appreciated so much about Crossing Paths was that it felt like the teenagers had helpful insights that the volunteers were delighted to hear and learn more about. It was truly a two-way-street of knowledge exchanged about technology and countless important topics. One of my favorite memories from Crossing Paths is when the volunteers and my friends got together to throw me a birthday party after my 16th birthday. One of the volunteers brought homemade cupcakes, and we all got together and celebrated, and it was truly so special. By the end of my first time doing Crossing Paths, I knew that this program was truly one of a kind and I continue to take part in it each semester it is offered at my school. My involvement with Crossing Paths also inspired me to get more involved with Empowering the Ages and all that it stands for. I am forever grateful for this program and invite all who are able to get involved! You won’t regret it!
